Cool resize plugin for GIMP

free software, gimp, ubuntu

Some time ago I saw this post about a super horizontal/vertical resize algorithm which preserves the proportions of what is important on an image. Yesterday I was reading unread posts on Planet Ubuntu when I saw this post of Jorge Bernal where he says that already exists a plugin for GIMP of this algorithm (this is why I love free software).

Well, I installed it on my computer and made a test with my picture. Look the “before” and “after”:

Plug-in de redimensionamento “inteligente” para o GIMP

If you want to play (and I think you will), download it for your plataform. After install it will be available on “Layer” menu.

Don’t be jealous…

Today is my birthday. So my wonderful wife gave me something that I would not expect:

Presente especial…

She gave me this box with three t-shirts on ubuntu color (red, orange and yellow). So I thought: “Cool, three t-shirts on ubuntu colors! And they look like the ubuntu logo”. But when I open the t-shirts I saw that they weren’t simple t-shirts:

Camisetas do Ubuntu

She ordered to embroider the ubuntu logo on the t-shirts and on the sleeve embroider the phrase that are on our wedding rings: “Semper Amemus”, that means that our love is forever.

Today I also updated my blog theme, where I’m using one of those t-shirts on the top… :)

NÃO!

Brasil says no to the OOXML format.

Congratulations to ABNT for this decision! We can’t accept a standard that doesn’t follow standards or a standard that only one company can implement

You know you’re working too much when…

… you say “I’ve already run the program” when you want to say “I’ve already woken up”.

Tonight I fell on my bed when I arrived in my house. When my wife came in to the bedroom she asked if I was awake and I said: “Yes! I’ve already run the program”… And I remember that I tried to say that I was awake when I said that. :P

Today i saw on meio-bit a post with a video about the MPX, a version of X server which supports multi-touch.

[MPX: Servidor X com suporte a multi-touch]

The project is still in the beginning, but it has two greats advantages over MS Surface: it’s free and it’s available now!

And the most beautiful: here comes the Ubuntu:

A special day

Today is a special day, 1 year and 11 months ago I was marring. Today I have a pretty wife and a wonderful marriage!

But today is also special for another reason: today would be anniversary of my father, José Abdala Noel, deceased in 92.

[Miss you]

It’s easy to find something about ourselves over the Internet, but as he died many years ago, there are no mention about him at Google, what is a big mistake. So I make here my homage and this special mention to the great mean he was.

I see a picture of a little child
standing alone
wondering where you are
I can’t believe how this child has grown
living this life
sometimes so alone
still I wish that I had one more chance
to have you hold me once again
but even though I know I can’t
you’ll hold me in heaven

(see you in heaven, Guardian)

Despite I miss him, I thank God for having always been a lovely and present Father, always on my side, and for having instructed me and lead me to where I am today.

3 years old!

[Birthday cake]Today my computer completes 3 years of life! 3 years ago I assembled him… By the way, I just remembered that he has my DNA. I cut my finger when I was mounting him, and when I saw, there was a little drop of my blood on the motherboard. Maybe it makes my computer stronger… :)

Much thing happens in the life of a computer in 3 years… I remember the relief that he felt when I eliminated totally Windows from him. He used Debian for a while, till know Ubuntu and “they live togheter and forever”.

They say that a 3-year-old computer is an ancient one, but he runs very fast with Ubuntu 7.04 + Beryl… Maybe I would celebrate installing Compiz Fusion over him… :)

[Ubuntu-BR Logo]Congratulations to the Ubuntu-BR, officially a LoCoTeam (Ubuntu Local Community). We have just been officialy approved by the Community Council as a LoCoTeam. The Ubuntu-BR has been done a great work on different areas, like: support, documentation, translation, security, advocacy, etc. The approval was “merely formality”.

Using part of BrazilianTeam ApprovalApplication page, this is what Ubuntu-BR is doing:

The Ubuntu Brazilian team was started about two and half years ago with the creation of the Planet Ubuntu Brazil and our Wiki. Since then we have increase in size and quality with each user that Ubuntu wins in Brazil, and we like to think we had something to do with this increase.

What we are doing

  • Guiding and Educating Users - Trying to make the switch to Ubuntu even easier, we have worked hard to get the new users comfortable with their new community. The current http://www.ubuntu-br.org webpage was written thinking on usability and acessibility. To direct new users where they should start, we have created the page Start Here page.
  • Advocacy - With more than 30 columnists, the Planet Ubuntu Brazil brings the word of Ubuntu every single day to the Ubuntu Brazilian users, keeping them updated about the Ubuntu news, tips and tricks and promoting the OS to new users.
  • Support - To help users to get support and involved with Ubuntu, we offer the support and discussion forum. Our huge portuguese forum is used by people from different countries where Portuguese is their main language, totalizing more than 12.000 registered users. Another form of support is the discussion lists freely available for the community. The major list is the ubuntu-br, where we have 1014 registered users.
  • Documentation - The main activities of the Brazilian Documentation Team are related with creating new documentation (tutorials, tips, how-to,…) in portuguese and organizing them in the Ubuntu Brazilian Wiki. The content is focused on new users, trying to make the instructions as easy to follow as possible once the number of new ubuntu users in Brazil is growing fast.
  • Translation - As you may know, the Translation Team is responsible for delivering to the end user a system completely translated in their languages, and it’s what the Ubuntu Portuguese Brazilian Translator does.
  • Advocate - We participate on some events giving presentations about the Brazillian community and how to use Ubuntu at home and yours organizations.
  • We also encourage new users to participate actively in the community. For example, each team has a wikipage explaining how to help, contribute and join the team, guiding the user through the “easiest” and “quickest” route to contribute. See the Documentation Team How To Participate page and the Translation Team one, and also the general How to Participate.

Ubuntu-BR is our community, and it exists thanks to everyone who contributes. So, congratulations to everybody for this great work that has been done.

Hello there!

This is my first post on my new blog (english version).

I have already another blog, in brazilian portuguese. There I post about everything that goes on my mind (a lot of ubuntu things)… On this english version I will assume the same criterious: whatever I’m thinking about on that moment.

I will use this blog to practice my english. I’m good on translate from english to portuguese, but I need to practice my “Portuguese to English”.

I would like to dedicate this first post to my eternal love, my beautiful wife, with this comic:
